WHITING, Ind. (WLFI) – A gutsy effort by Jackson Anthrop spurred Central Catholic to an 8-3 win in 18 innings over Westview on Saturday night at Oil City Stadium.
Anthrop worked out of six difficult moments for Central Catholic. He pitched 10 innings and allowed one earned run on four hits. The sophomore faced his toughest moment in the tenth inning with runners on the corners and one out. Anthrop dove off the mound, caught a line drive and doubled off a Westview runner at first base to end the threat and the inning.
The game was back-and-forth heading into the eighteenth, with five lead changes.
Central Catholic took the lead in the eighteenth inning and held on for the victory. The Knights took the lead for good on a two-run double by Evan Kennedy off Judah Zickafoose, scoring Anthrop and Anthony Berumen.
Nate Wiercioch got the win in relief for Central Catholic, the junior pitched two innings and allowed no runs.
On a night where both teams were left frustrated and searching for answers with runners in scoring position, CC was led by Berumen and Adam Lovell, who teamed up for six hits and two RBI.
Westview posted one run in each of the second, fifth and thirteenth. In the second, Westview scored on an RBI double by John Yoder, bringing home Jordan Stoltzfus.
Central Catholic advances to a Class 2A Semi-State showdown against Wapahani at either Plymouth or Kokomo Saturday, June 14.
