LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WISH) — An Indiana community is reacting to the news that two suspects from their neighborhood are connected to the the Las Vegas deadly shootings.
Our sister station WISH-TV spent the day in Lafayette and talked to neighbors who said they were shocked by the shooting. Two people said they had a close relationship with Jerad and Amanda Miller. They said what happened in Las Vegas this weekend took their breath away, especially hearing Amanda was connected.
“I have them; we do have pictures together,” said friend Leslie Schneidt.
Schneidt looked at pictures on her mobile phone of fun times she said she had with Amanda Miller. Schneidt said the two talked here and there.
“I actually talked to her in May. It was the last time I heard from her and she was telling me about how they got new jobs,” she said.
Schneidt showed a picture of the two of them last year in Lafayette. Amanda is holding the sign. Schenidt said she was shy, but loved wearing masks.
“She was a big harlequin freak, so they dressed up as harlequin and joker,” Schneidt said.
She also shared a picture of Jerad Miller holding a sign too. His face is also covered. Schneidt said the picture was taken at the Million Mask March in downtown Lafayette last year. She said Jerad wasn’t shy about talking about anti-government and gun control.
Schneidt said Jerad and Amanda lived with her and her boyfriend Nicholas Waye, before they moved to Las Vegas.
“Jerad doesn’t surprise me, however, Amanda it kind of shocked me,” Waye said.
Jerad and Amanda lived in a south side Lafayette duplex before moving west. Connie Kennedy knew them.
“He was strange, Jerad was. But Amanda was a sweet girl,” Kennedy said.
Schneidt said she’s known Amanda since high school. She said they moved to Vegas for a new life.
“Things weren’t going so well down here for them, they just wanted to start over,” Schneidt said.
Amanda’s parents didn’t want to talk on camera, but one of their neighbors also told me hearing her connected to the news is unlike her. That neighbor said Amanda excelled at art and music in school.
