INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Former Indiana State basketball star Jake Odum worked out for the Pacers Thursday as he tries to fulfill his dream of making an NBA roster.
The Pacers were the eighth team he’s showcased his skills for in preparation for the NBA Draft on June 26th.
Odum had a standout career at Indiana State, but the guy he was trying to impress on the Bankers Life Fieldhouse practice court is the greatest Sycamore of all-time, Pacers president Larry Bird.
“I grew up watching Reggie Miller and the Pacers winning a bunch of games,” Odum said. “Being able to come into this facility and work out in front of Larry Bird and Frank Vogel, it’s just a great opportunity and I appreciate that.”
Odum grew up in Terre Haute, but Thursday was the first time he ever talked with Bird.
“He’s idolized in Terre Haute,” Odum added. “You can’t go anywhere without somebody talking about Larry Bird, so for him to be in the gym watching me play, it’s an honor.”
Odum worked out with Michigan State’s Keith Appling, Duke’s Andre Dawkins, North Carolina’s James Michael McAdoo, St Joseph’s Ronald Roberts and Florida’s Scottie Wilbekin.
