White County crash leaves motorcycle rider dead

WHITE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) — A motorcycle rider is dead and a driver is arrested after a two-vehicle crash in White County.

The crash happened at 3:19 p.m. on County Road 650 East, just north of Buffalo, Ind. Sheriff Pat Shafer said a red passenger car driven by Raul Salazar Diaz, 37, of Idaville, was traveling south and Travis Hunt, 32, of Winamac, was on his motorcycle going north. Shafer said Diaz traveled left of the center line and collided with the motorcycle.

Hunt was transported to IU Health White Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Shafer said Hunt was not wearing a helmet. Diaz was not injured.

Shafer said there’s a lot that goes into the investigation of a fatal crash.

“We do call out a reconstructionist to come out to assist with the investigation,” said Shafer. “We turn our findings over to the prosecutor.”

Shafer said blood tests were taken from Diaz. He was arrested for operating a motor vehicle without ever receiving a license. Shafer said he was booked into the White County Jail.

The road remained closed for three hours while the traffic accident reconstructionist worked to collect evidence and piece together the crash.

The White County Sheriff’s Office, Liberty Township Fire Department and the White County EMA assisted with the crash.
