WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Northwestern Avenue was closed for about two hours due to a gas leak earlier this morning, but police said another West Lafayette roadway remains closed.

West Lafayette Police Department have reopened Northwestern Avenue, but shut down North Street from Northwestern Avenue to Andrew Place. WLPD said use alternate route for travel at this time.

Firefighters were called to Northwestern Avenue around 8:45 a.m. Thursday. They said crews hit a gas line while working on the apartment complex where the old Bar Barry Liquor building was located.

Assistant Fire Chief Robert Molter said Vectren representatives were called to the scene and were able to get the leak under control.

“They shut all the valves off and still had a little flow of gas yet, and they had to dig a hole and pinch the line completely off, and now they’ll begin to repair the line,” Molter said.

North Street remains closed at this time. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
