Teen encourages friends to give blood on her birthday

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A Lafayette area teen who just turned 17 is asking her friends not to give her a birthday party and gifts. Instead, Sydney Richter is asking them to give a pint of blood.

With the help of the Indiana Blood Center, Richter set up a blood drive in Lafayette. She invited her friends and family to stop by and donate. Richter planned the drive over the last few weeks.

Coincidentally, her mother Tina was rushed to the hospital a few days before, where she received a blood transfusion. Richter says that her mother’s emergency solidified, in her mind, the need to give blood.

Her mother Tina Richter-Sweat said Sydney lives a selfless life.

“You wouldn’t expect a 17 year old to, first of all, not want presents. Especially, when she’s getting ready to go on a trip,” said Richter-Sweat. “She didn’t want the presents. She just wants to save lives.”

Richter said they it helps so many.

“Thousands of people need blood everyday and each person has around 10 to 12 pints of blood in their body. When you donate, they only take one pint. Which is a very small amount, but it helps so many people.”
