FRANKFORT, Ind. (WLFI) – A Clinton County construction company is shutting down after 99 years of business.
Gill Construction Company will be closing up shop next month. The company helped build the Coca-Cola plant, part of the Ivy Tech Frankfort campus, and most of the industrial area outside of Frankfort, Ind.
The company was started in 1915 by Smith’s grandfather Arthur Gill. Company President Stanley Smith has worked at the company since 1970.
Smith said he and his wife are closing the business, so they can retire and enjoy life.
“We’ve been talking about it for several months and decided early in May that this was the time to go ahead, get it done, and enjoy hopefully our last 20-plus years,” said Smith.
He said it’s hard to believe how long the business has been around and how much has changed.
“I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, we’re going to be 100 years old one of these days.’ Well, we’re going to fall just a little bit short of a 100, but close enough to call it a success,” said Smith.
The company will hold an auction on July 22 to sell all of its equipment acquired over the years. Smith said some of the equipment dates back before he started working for the company.
