WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Purdue Sports) – Purdue baseball alumnus Kevin Plawecki has been selected as part of the U.S. Team for the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, which is set to be televised live by MLB Network from Target Field Sunday, July 13.

The U.S. and World Team rosters were announced Tuesday (June 24) for the 16th edition of the Minor League exhibition. First pitch from Minneapolis is set for 5 p.m. ET. Longtime Twins manager Tom Kelly will serve as the skipper of the U.S. Team.

Major League Baseball, in conjunction with the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau, MLB.com, Baseball America and the 30 Major League clubs, selected the 25-man rosters for the U.S. and World Teams. Each Major League organization is represented and players from all full-season Minor Leagues were eligible to participate.

Plawecki will represent the New York Mets along with right-hander Noah Syndergaard, who is currently pitching for the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas. Coincidentally, both catchers on the U.S. Team are Indiana natives. Muncie native Justin O’Conner is in his fourth full season of pro ball in the Tampa Bay Rays’ system. Plawecki is a Carmel native who has been playing well for the Binghamton Mets of the Double-A Eastern League this season.

The 2012 Purdue Male Athlete of the Year and Big Ten Player of the Year, Plawecki is ranked No. 6 among the Mets’ Top 20 prospects at MLB.com. With a .326/.378/.487 slash line to go along with 24 extra-base hits and 43 RBI through 58 games as of June 23, Plawecki could be in line for a promotion to Triple-A soon ESPNNewYork.com reported this week. The Mets have a bit of a logjam at catcher with Travis d’Arnaud returning from a MiLB rehab assignment.

Plawecki figures to be a sure-fire all-star in the Eastern League if a promotion doesn’t come first. The Eastern League All-Star Game is set for Wednesday, July 16 in Altoona, Pa., the same week as the Futures Game. He was also picked as a mid-season all-star in the Class A South Atlantic League last season and was promoted to High A not long after playing in the SAL All-Star Game.

Plawecki is one of eight former Boilermakers on active rosters in Minor League Baseball this season, five of whom were part of Purdue’s 2012 Big Ten championship team.
