Logansport athlete takes home the gold

LOGANSPORT, Ind. (WLFI) – A Logansport athlete with autism returned home with three gold medals and a silver.

Sam Fawley competed in the swimming competition at the Special Olympics in New Jersey. Fawley has been swimming for 16 years. He swam 2,500 yards two to three days a week to prepare.

In 2010, Fawley competed in the National Special Olympics in Nebraska. Fawley took home a gold medal in a relay event, but only silver and bronze in the individual races. While medaling, Fawley said he wanted to at least win one gold individually.

“My expectations were of course to do the best that I could possibly do. My goals were to at least come back one medal — one gold medal — but I came back with three golds and a silver, so I kind of surpassed my expectations,” said Fawley.

Fawley said he credits the competition for helping him grow socially, and that being in the pool helps to calm his nerves.

Fawley said plans to continue swimming as long as his body will let him.
