TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) — The Tippecanoe County Clerk began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples on Thursday morning.

She was initially issuing forms that stated “Refusal,” because the state’s license form only has boxes declaring “bride” and “”groom.” Coffey said she could not alter the form until she is authorized by the state health department.

About a dozen same-sex couples walked into the Tippecanoe County Courthouse requesting marriage licenses on Thursday morning, but were initially issued the “refusal” forms. That changed around 9:30 a.m. Thursday when Coffey said she had state authorization to issue licenses to same sex couples.
