TIPTON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – Indiana State Police confirmed an on-duty Tipton County Sheriff’s Department deputy has died in a crash Saturday night. The deputy was originally from Flora.
Indiana State Police say Jacob Calvin, 31, was on his way to a crash on State Road 28 and Tipton County Road 500 West just before 10 p.m.
Investigators say he was driving at a high rate of speed with emergency lights and siren on.
According to State Police, Deputy Calvin was northbound on Tipton County Road 300 West near County Road 300 South when for an unknown reason his vehicle left the east side of the roadway and rolled several times, coming to a stop after 100 yards. Calvin was ejected from the vehicle and died from his injuries.
From the preliminary investigation State Police say it appears Deputy Calvin was not wearing his seat belt.
According to Indiana State Police Lt. Jeremy Kelly, news of Deputy Calvin’s death has been tough on those who worked with him at the sheriff’s department.
“This is a difficult situation anytime this happens. They’re doing the best that can be expected. They have a lot of support in the community. Deputy Calvin was well thought of, a hard worker. They are surrounded by great people in this community. He was a Tipton resident. But they are doing as well as they could be.” Said Lt. Kelly.
Deputy Calvin was a two and a half year veteran of the Tipton County Sheriff’s Department.
