TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – Summer is here which means family vacation season is in full swing, and with that we want to remind you to try and avoid picking up unwanted and unwelcome guests.
Bed bugs also like to travel.
An annoying pest is all it takes to ruin your vacation fun, and the bad news is, they’re often difficult to avoid.
“It doesn’t matter what level of hotel, motel, or five star resort that you are going to there is just a big possibility that there have been bed bugs there,” said Travella Myers, with the Vigo County Health Department.
Instead of asking have you had bed bugs, instead ask what they’ve done in the past to get rid of them.
“The correct answer is they close down the room and they have a professional exterminator come in and treat the room, and maybe even the rooms on the side,” said Myer.
It’s still important to do some inspecting of your own.
“I don’t even take my belongings into the room until we’ve gone through lifted up blankets, sheets, and looked for any signs or evidence that there are bed bugs,” said Myers.
Signs of bed bugs can often be found in the seams of a bed.
“You will see their hauls or their husks,” said Myers.
Bed bugs can’t fly or jump but they are great hitchhikers.
“They will definitely get in your suitcase and go the next place with you,” said Myers.
There’s one more step to take before returning home.
“Always go to the laundry mat and take everything you had and put in the dryer for 20 minutes on high heat and that should kill the bed bugs,” said Myers.
They may be a nuisance, but bed bugs are not considered a health hazard because they do not transmit diseases.
