Union representative calls for Congress to fix roadways

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A representative from a union group is traveling across the United States, urging congress to improve roads and bridges.

Lisa Martin from the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA) is visiting different cities, attempting to educate people about the country’s aging infrastructure. Martin made a stop in Lafayette to discuss her concerns.

There is a  LiUNA mobile app showing where the union believes potentially hazardous bridges and roadways are in the United States. According to the app, the two most at-risk bridges in Tippecanoe County are located on State Road 26 near Monitor and the 225 bridge near Battle Ground.

Martin says fixing bridges and roadways will save lives.

“We’re urging the public to send a message or give their member of Congress a call and ask for a full investment, long-term highway bill,” said Martin.

The bridges found on the mobile app are rated by the United States Department of Transportation. To learn more about LiUNA’s efforts, click here.
