Lafayette Police said two adults found two toddlers ages two and three wandering in the parking lot of Bar Barry Liquors at 16th and Main streets around 10:30 p.m. on July 4. When police arrived they were able to talk to the 3-year-old, but said he was hysterical and not very verbal so they did not get a lot of information.

Court documents say police then started asking people on the streets if they knew the children. One person said his friend was the father of one of the children. Police were able to reach the father who told them he had left his son in the care of this mother, Jones, earlier in the day. He said the other child belonged to Jones’ friend.

Police went to Jones’ residence at 1507 South Street. They found another child, a 1-year-old, asleep, with no adult supervision. Police said after being on the scene for about 45 minutes Jones showed up and aggressively yelled “now what?”

Jones told officers she had only been gone for 15 minutes. After talking to witnesses officers determined Jones had been gone for about two and a half hours.
