Coroner identifies body found in Lafayette apartment

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – The body that was found Tuesday in a vacant Lafayette apartment has been officially identified as Kelly Thornton.

Tippecanoe County Coroner Donna Avolt confirmed it was Thornton, a woman who was reportedly last seen Friday.

As News 18 has reported, police were called to Sun Villa Apartments around 3 p.m. Tuesday after a maintenance man found the body.

Wednesday’s official identification confirms what Thornton’s family already believed to be true Tuesday.

The official cause of death has not been determined, but her family believes Thornton overdosed on heroin.

An autopsy is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
