MONTICELLO, Ind. (WLFI) – A woman is dead following a wave runner crash on Lake Shafer Saturday afternoon.

It happened just after 4 p.m. just above the Norway Dam.

Conservation officers said 43-year-old Anne Wittstock, of Burbank, Illinois, was driving the wave runner with a passenger on board.

For an unknown reason, she drove the wave runner into the NIPSCO security cables that are stretched across the lake to keep boaters away from the Norway Dam.

Nearby boaters were able to recover Wittstock from the water and began CPR. The Monticello Fire Department transported Wittstock to the IU White Memorial Hospital, where she was flown to IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Wittstock was later pronounced dead at Methodist.

The male passenger, Joseph Allen, also of Illiniois, was uninjured.

Conservation officers said alcohol and speed are believed to be a factor in this crash. The incident is still under investigation.
