WAYNE COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – Police said the car that crashed head-on with a bus on I-70 Sunday morning had been stolen just prior to the crash.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said Phillip Lloyd, of Richmond, stole a 1990 Ford Mustang from the Love’s Truck Stop on U.S. 35.

Police said Lloyd was driving westbound on the interstate in the eastbound lanes when the crash happened around 7 a.m. Sunday. I-70 is divided by a median with a cable strand barrier in the median at the point where the crash happened. Police said evidence at the scene indicates the car crashed into the bus in the eastbound lanes near mile marker 149.

Lloyd was pronounced dead at the scene and 19 passengers on the bus were taken to the hospital.

Those passengers were taken to Reid Hospital for treatment for minor cuts and bruises. The driver was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. The extent of his injuries were not immediately released.

A total of 24 passengers were aboard the bus when the crash happened. The Greyhound was traveling from St. Louis, Missouri to Dayton, Ohio. The final destination was set for New York.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Richmond Police Department, Indiana State Police, Centerville Police Department, Richmond Fire Department, Indiana Department of Transportation, Wayne County Coroner’s Office, and numerous EMS units.

Greyhound officials said they will conduct their own investigation on the crash.
