INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Detectives in Indianapolis announced on Tuesday they made an arrest in a 2007 cold case murder.

According to IMPD, on July 10 the United States Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force Unit apprehended 29-year-old James Bates for the murder of Kenneth Beeler Sr.

Police say Bates was arrested for Beeler’s murder in 2007, but the charges were dismissed due to evidentiary problems.

Detectives say after that the case was unsolved and was given to homicide detectives in the Cold Case Unit. New information was obtained by detectives and a warrant for Bates was issued on July 2 of this year.

He was apprehended eight days later.

Bates has been preliminarily charged with murder and carrying a handgun without a license. He was taken to the Arrestee Processing Center. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
