FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The Allen County Sheriff’s Department investigated a fatal crash near New Haven Sunday night.

Sheriff’s department spokesperson Corporal Jeremy Tinkel said the single-vehicle crash happened at Paulding Road and Minnich Road near I-469 around 10:30 p.m.

The driver of the van was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tinkel said a domestic situation occurred between the man and a person in a separate vehicle. The situation escalated to the point the man was chasing his wife and stepdaughter in another vehicle down Paulding Road when he crashed.

Investigators said speed is a likely factor in the crash and will await further tests to determine if alcohol was also involved.

Several officers said the woman had called police initially and dispatchers were talking with the daughter on the phone in attempt to get them to either slow down or get to a police station.

Tinkel cautioned anyone in a similar situation to attempt to get to a police station and seek help if they must drive.

The woman is not likely to face charges, according to Tinkel.

The crash remains under investigation.
