LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A Lafayette woman is warning other women after her purse was taken out of her cart at a local grocery store right under her nose. It happened at the Payless on Beck Lane Tuesday.
It didn’t take long for 73-year-old Candace Yoakum to realize her purse was missing from her grocery cart. She said she was shopping for bacon. After a few minutes of looking at the different products, she turned back around to her cart and immediately noticed that her purse was gone.
Yoakum said she went straight to the store’s manager and he called Lafayette police. She said it took police at least an hour to arrive on scene because they were responding to a call at another grocery store.
“About 20 minutes later, they had the same thing happen at the Greenbush Payless. They got a video of the woman there, I guess. They showed me the video when they finally came to the Payless on Beck Lane and wanted to know if it looked like my purse. Well, it looked like my purse on this woman’s shoulder,” said Yoakum.
Yoakum said $300 in cash, credit cards, her social security card, her ID card and prescriptions were taken. The thief also took a treasured picture of her and her daughter.
She wants other women to hear her story, so they can be more aware of their surroundings while out in public.
Lafayette police declined to comment to News 18 because they say it is an active investigation. In a daily report log, it’s documented that police responded to another purse snatching 20 minutes earlier at the Payless off State Road 38, near the Tippecanoe Mall.
