SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – An embattled South Bend Common Council member facing two misdemeanor charges after allegedly driving drunk down the wrong way on a highway is taking a medical leave of absence.
Henry Davis Jr. has an initial court appearance Aug. 11 on two misdemeanor charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He has declined comment on the charges. According to court documents, Davis has admitted to drinking but denied being drunk at the time of his July 19 arrest.
Davis faces a maximum sentence of 14 months in jail.
Last month, the council president dismissed misconduct charges against Davis after some residents complained he had posted an explicit photo on Facebook in January. He was later criticized for sharing a tweet that made a disparaging remark about Republicans.
