As distribution day nears, still plenty of time to help Tools for School

News 18 sits down with Major Jim Irvine to discuss distribution day.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Families will be lining up for the Tools for School distribution day, and the Salvation Army remains optimistic that there will be enough school supplies for everyone.

Right now, the drive is still in need of “big ticket items.” Salvation Army’s Major Jim Irvine said, “So far, we have about 500 backpacks. We’re expecting about 1,100 to 1,200 students to come through.”

Even though the drive officially ended on Friday, Aug. 1, items will still be accepted through Saturday.

Distribution day is Saturday, Aug, 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the LARA building. LARA is located at 1100 Elizabeth St. in Lafayette across from the Salvation Army. Parents must bring proof of income and ID for themselves and their children. Distribution day works on a first come, first serve basis.

There is also room for volunteer opportunities. If you would like to assist during the distribution, simply call the Salvation Army at 765-742-0006. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
