HENRY COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – A young man was sentenced to 16 years in prison on Thursday after he pleaded guilty to child molesting.

Caleb Cooper, 20, of New Castle, was charged with child molesting and criminal confinement after he took a 6-year-old girl into his apartment at the Autumn Oaks complex against her will in June of 2013.

According to court documents, Cooper was playing on a playground with the girl and her brother when he grabbed her and pulled her up to his apartment to “show her his new kitten.” Police said the girl’s brother knocked on several apartment doors until someone answered and called police.

Police went into Cooper’s apartment and found the girl naked. The victim told police Cooper had kissed her and tried to have sex with her.

Cooper pleaded guilty to child molesting and the judge then dismissed the criminal confinement charge. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison and was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and abide by the Indiana Special Probation Conditions for Adult Sex Offenders and Probation Terms and Conditions.

Cooper has already spent a year in jail, plus he received three years suspended, so he will be spending 16 years total behind bars.
