LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – It’s a new feature meant to make it easy on parents, but some parents said that feature might make it a little too easy.
“I think it has good intentions, but I think there are some privacy issue concerns,” said Lafayette resident Nora Tribble, whose grandson rides the bus.
The feature is a new bus tracking tab on the Lafayette School Corporation’s website. All anyone has to do is type in their address and up pops the bus route information, including pickup and drop-off times and bus stop location.
No password or username are needed.
“Just for the fact that there could be anybody out there, they shouldn’t know where certain kids are going to be at certain times of day,” said parent Joseph Lewis.
Lafayette School Corporation Superintendent Les Huddle said the goal of the tracking system is to keep parents informed about their child’s bus route.
“It just gives our families a little more access and transparency to where the child’s being picked up, what time, bus number, those sorts of things,” said Huddle.
Huddle said right now, he’s comfortable with the current security features. He said the tracking tool doesn’t give out students’ names and said LSC staff members are always making sure bus stops are a safe place to be.
“Our bus drivers on the lookout for students at the bus stop, and they’re in contact with radios and can get back to our transportation or the police if needed,” said Huddle.
Huddle said if parents start expressing concerns about their children’s safety and the bus tracking tab, they’ll address those concerns immediately.
