WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Purdue Sports) – The 2014 Boilermaker volleyball team will begin the season at the eighth-ranked team in the nation, according to the AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll released on Monday.

Purdue, which ended the 2013 season ranked eighth after posting a 23-12 mark and advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight, will face seven ranked teams and two that received votes in the poll.

Boilermaker foes listed among the top 25 are: No. 1 Penn State, No. 6 Wisconsin, No. 7 Nebraska, No. 11 Illinois, No. 12 Minnesota, No. 14 San Diego and No. 16 Michigan State.  Mortar Board Premier opponent LSU and Big Ten foe Michigan were listed among those receiving votes.

The Boilermaker squad consists of nine returning players and seven newcomers, which were collectively named as the No. 3 recruiting class in the nation. Fans are invited to see the team in action in an intrasquad scrimmage at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, and in a match against program alumnae at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, before the home opener on August 29.

The No. 8 preseason ranking is the highest in program history, ahead of the No. 9 listing to start the 2012 season. Purdue has been ranked as high as seventh in program lore, on Nov. 14, 1983 and on Aug. 27, 2012.
