Woman taken to hospital after Lafayette stabbing

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A woman was taken to an Indianapolis hospital after being stabbed in the neck in Lafayette Monday night.

Police told News 18 that Sara Crutchfield, 59, was stabbed after an altercation with her roommate Richard Burke, 55.

It happened around 8:45 p.m. at an apartment in 1100 block of Main Street.

Investigators said a neighbor called 911 after hearing a possible domestic dispute. When police arrived, they looked in the windows and saw Burke assaulting Crutchfield.

But when Crutchfield leaned back, officers noticed a large amount of blood on her neck. LPD Lt. Perry Amos said that’s when they kicked in the door, took Crutchfield outside to begin medical treatment, and then chased Burke through the house.

“Officer Switzer then confronted Burke in the kitchen where he grabbed a secondary knife. As Officer Switzer was deploying his Taser, that’s the same time that Burke stabbed himself in the chest one time,” said Lt. Amos.

Both people were taken to Franciscan St. Elizabeth East. Crutchfield was then transported to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis where she remains as of Tuesday.

As of late Monday, police were unsure of the relationship between the couple other than both were living at the apartment.
