Purdue football Jersey Scrimmage

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Purdue Sports) — The offense topped the defense 69-50 in the Jersey Scrimmage Saturday at Ross-Ade Stadium. The three quarterbacks had similar strong showings, as each threw for more than 130 yards and combined to complete better than 65% of their passes. Full stats from the scrimmage can be found below.

Danny Etling marched the offense on a 75-yard scoring drive to open the scrimmage. Raheem Mostert had a 21-yard rush, before Etling connected with B.J. Knauf for 21 more. On fourth and 10 at the defense’s 33-yard line, Etling found Danny Anthrop for 26 yards down to the seven. Three players later, Etling rushed around the left side for a three-yard score.

Etling finished the day 11-24 for 143 yards and a 15-yard touchdown pass to DeAngelo Yancey.

Austin Appleby found his rhythm, connecting on 16 of 20 passes for 131 yards. He also did it with his legs, rushing for 38 yards on his opening drive, which was eventually stalled by a fumble. David Blough’s numbers were nearly identical, as the freshman went 15 for 20 for 131 yards and one interception on a play that was originally signaled a catch and first down.

Mostert finished with seven carries for 34 yards, including his 21-yarder, while Keyante Green ran eight times for 60 yards with one lost fumble. Shane Mikesky led the receivers with seven receptions for 112 yards. Yancey was the only player to catch a touchdown and finished with four catches for 45 yards and the score. Freshman Greg Phillips had a nice afternoon blocking down field and receiving. He finished with three catches for 46 yards, including a 24-yard reception from Etling on third and nine that was set up by a huge block by Trae Hart on Andy James Garcia.

Several defenders had nice days as well. Dezwan Polk-Campbell led the way with seven tackles, 1.5 for loss and a half sack. Ryan Watson and Ryan Russell had four tackles and 2.0 sacks each. In all, the defense sacked the quarterback eight times during the scrimmage and forced three turnovers. Danny Ezechukwu and Joe Gilliam recovered fumbles, while Sean Lydster came up with an interception, ripping the ball away from Mikesky on a deep ball.

The offense is 3-0 in Jersey Scrimmages under head coach Darrell Hazell. The offense earns the black practice jerseys for the fall and will wear them until the spring’s Jersey Scrimmage.

Coach Hazell is pleased with his team thus far in fall camp. He has liked the hard work and dedication from his group, as well as the emergence of some leaders on both sides of the ball. A full interview with Hazell can be found below.
