New hoops location coming to Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Basketball courts are coming to the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds.

Tippecanoe County Commissioners approved a plan to build two three-quarter courts on 18th Street. The $60,000 project is being raised through donations.

YMCA CEO Paul Cramer said Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski and Tippecanoe County Sheriff Tracy Brown approached him nine months ago about building the courts. He said they wanted to help the kids after hoops were removed from Columbian Park.

Cramer said these courts will provide a safe place for kids to play.

“The fire station is right next door. The YMCA is very close in proximity, and it’s a very visible location with a lot of traffic on 18th Street,” Cramer explained. “So, we think that all together will be very helpful.

Cramer said the courts will be similar to ones in Murdock Park.

Construction will begin in late September and is set to be complete by Oct. 1.
