New WL Street Commissioner sworn in

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — A new West Lafayette employee will be filling the shoes of a 30-year veteran.

This summer Street Commissioner Dave Downey retired after 30 years on the job. Tuesday his replacement Doug Payne was sworn in by Mayor John Dennis.

Payne’s background is in construction. He said he is excited about his new responsibilities. But after 30 years with Downey, this experience will be new to a lot of people.

“I think the way things are going — when all the new stuff comes down, when the city grows — we will have to make some changes,” Payne said. “But I think right now there is just a good ball rolling, and we’re just going to keep it going that way.”

Payne will start his new job immediately. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
