Man claims to be carjacking victim in Gary; then crashed in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A man claiming to have been carjacked in Gary will be waking up in a Lafayette hospital Thursday morning.

According to Lafayette police, Steven Pinex walked into a Speedway gas station on State Road 26 just before 3:30 a.m. covered in blood and mud after he said he crashed his car on Interstate 65.

He told police he was jumped by three men in Gary while visiting his girlfriend, Jacqueline Sain, at Gary Methodist Hospital. He said the men beat him and then forced him to drive south toward Indianapolis.

As they got closer to Lafayette, Pinex says the three men began to beat him again. He says that’s when he wrecked the car and was able to escape.

Pinex said the men who robbed him drove off with the vehicle, despite telling police the car was also not driveable.

Police say Pinex was incoherent as they talked to him at the gas station. He was taken to IU Health Arnett after police interviewed him at the Speedway.
