Lafayette murder victim’s dog in caring hands

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – The pet of a murder victim is now in caring hands.

Known simply as “Dog,” the three-year-old pit bull used to belong to Rick Couch. As News 18 previously reported, Couch was found beaten to death in his Lafayette home Wednesday morning.

Neighbor and dog trainer Lori Gooding asked Lafayette police if she could care for the dog after another neighbor alerted her to the situation. She said that neighbor heard Dog barking in the night, leading them to check on Couch’s well-being.

“That’s what pit bulls were bred for. They were bred to be loyal family dogs and to take care of children and that’s what Dog did. He cared for the one-year-old and for Rick the whole time,” said Gooding. “I get emotional about that because that child was there and she wouldn’t leave the child’s side.”

Dog is now living with fellow trainer, and Couch family friend, Scott Stone. He will keep her for 30 days and certify her as a therapy dog. He will then put her up for adoption or keep her.
