Driver leads IMPD on chase from DUI checkpoint

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Police say a driver fled from a DUI checkpoint, leading police on a chase before crashing into a tree Sunday morning.

According to IMPD, the driver was nearing the checkpoint, near Pennsylvania Street and South Street, around 1:00 a.m. Sunday, when he made a sudden u-turn.

Police say they tried to stop the driver, but he fled, leading police the wrong way down two streets.

The chase ended at Orange Street and East Street, which is about a mile and a half from where the checkpoint was stationed.

Police say the driver hit a tree and ran from his car. An open bottle of liquor was found in the car.
