Solutions still being weighed for Barton Beach Road residents

Barton Beach Road update

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – Solutions are still being weighed to help those living on Barton Beach Road. Earlier this year an ice jam on the Wildcat Creek caused major flooding on the Tippecanoe County road.

Monday Tippecanoe County Commissioners approved the application of a federal mitigation grant. The grant is for $250,000. If it is awarded to the county the Federal Emergency Management Agency will look at the six affected homes, and determine which ones can be bought out.

“It would be nice if all six properties were chosen because then they can all be acquired and demolished, and the flood threat in that area of Barton Beach Road would then be mitigated or removed forever,” Tippecanoe County grant administrator Laurie Wilson said.

Wilson said Indiana has never received this type of mitigation grant. The application should be complete in the next few weeks. Local funds will have to match whatever amount over $250,000 it takes to acquire and demolish the homes.
