ROSEMONT, Ill. (Purdue Sports) – Erika Arkans’ multi-goal effort in Purdue women’s soccer’s 4-1 victory vs. SIU Edwardsville Sunday has earned the first-year Boilermaker Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors.

Arkans scored Purdue’s second and fourth goals in the win after entering the game as a substitute in the 26th minute. She went on to log 60 minutes off the bench and also hit the crossbar with her first shot of the game. The San Diego area native missed Friday night’s victory due to a hamstring injury.

Arkans also had the game-winning goal in the 2-0 victory against Ohio Aug. 24. She became the sixth freshman in program history to account for the team’s first goal of the season.

Arkans shared Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors this week with Megan Schafer of Penn State. She joins Maddy Williams (2013), Kim Love (2012) and Alex Hairston (2011) as active Boilermakers to garner the honor. Williams is only other current Purdue player with a multi-goal game on her college résumé.

The conference office announced the weekly awards on Wednesday, instead of the traditional Monday schedule, this week due to one game being played on Monday (Butler at Iowa) and two on Tuesday (Oakland at Michigan State and Ohio State at Toledo).

Arkans is one of six freshmen that have started at least one game for Purdue this season. The Boilermakers are back in action Thursday when they take on Marshall at 7 p.m. in Huntington, W.Va.
