WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — An educator with the Tippecanoe School Corporation was named a finalist for Teacher of the Year.

Harrison High School teacher Kathy Nimmer was one of 10 finalists named by the Indiana Department of Education for the award. Nimmer teaches English and creative writing and holds a bachelor’s degree in English Education from Trinity Christian College and a master’s degree in English from Purdue University.

Nimmer, who has been teaching at Harrison since 1992, is a national board-certified teacher, a 1998 Golden Apple Award winner and two-time recipient of the Lilly Teacher Creativity Fellowship. She has two books published on disability, one in 2006 and the other in 2010.

In a release to News 18, Harrison Principal Al Remaly said Nimmer is very deserving of this recognition.

“Kathy is one of the most passionate teachers I have ever seen,” Remaly said in the release. “She has the ability to bring her class to life and positively impact each student. …She has a unique style that sets her apart from others and distinguishes her as one of the best educators I have seen.”

Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz made top 10 finalists announcement on Thursday. She said it was an honor to name them.

“As a life-long educator, I have always been impressed by the work the teachers do throughout Indiana day after day,” Ritz told News 18 in a release. “These teachers have demonstrated their dedication to their craft and their students and I am honored to name them as finalists for Indiana Teacher of the Year.”
