LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – If you feel like you can eat an entire large Arni’s cheese pizza and then some, you’re invited to step up and enter Arni’s pizza eating contest on Sunday, Sept. 25.
Arni’s owner Brad Cohen stopped by News 18 This Morning to give us a taste of the contest.
“It’s a one hour pizza eating contest,” said Cohen. “You have an opportunity to win $1,000.”
Cohen hopes to give the contest a festival feel. It will be set up outside in the Arni’s Market Square parking lot with a live band, a beer garden and a balloon animal artist for the kids. He estimates about 70 people will enter the contest and hopes they all bring their families to cheer them on.
“We’ll give prizes to the best cheering section. We’ll give prizes to the best costume,” promised Cohen.
It costs $25 to register. Registration begins at 3:00 p.m. with the contest starting at 4 p.m.
Each contestant will then be given one large cheese pizza.
“You’ll sit for an hour, and you can’t get up,” explained Cohen. “About 50 to 60 percent of people make it past the large.”
After the large, contestants have to eat as many small cheese pizzas as they can.
“In the past, the winner usually eats about six more smalls,” said Cohen. “Last year, we had a phenomenal record that was busted by a lady from California. [She] ended up eating 13 small [pizzas] in addition to the large.”
The first place winner gets $1,000. Arni’s will also give $1,000 to the Mary T. Klinker Veterans Center.
