LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Gina Boyd of Mayflower Mill Elementary School has been awarded the John Morton Excellence in Teaching Award from the Council for Economic Education.

The award recognizes Boyd for teaching the importance of economics and financial education to her students.

She also puts together after-school workshops for other teachers on how to incorporate economics education into their coursework.

Boyd, who has been teaching for 24 years, said kids need to learn about money well before high school.

“It’s really important for us to start educating kids about financial and fiscal responsibilities really early on,” said Boyd. “Waiting until they are a senior in high school is a mistake, and we need to start earlier.”

Boyd will receive the award at the Financial Literacy and Economic Education conference on Oct. 7 in Phoenix.
