Man charged after two injured by pellet gun near Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A man accused of shooting a pellet gun at people near Purdue University’s campus last week is now formally charged.

Christopher Smith Jr., of Frankfort, faces two counts of battery resulting in serious bodily injury, battery by means of a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness.

Prosecutors said Smith was on top of the Wood Street Parking Garage with two other people last Tuesday. They believe he shot an air-powered pellet gun with a scope at two people near the intersection of Grant and Wood streets.

Both victims ended up having to go to the hospital, with the pellets still in their bodies. According to court documents, one victim had a collapsed lung.

Court documents also said Smith and the two people with him admitted he shot the gun while they were in custody.
