LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Lafayette police officers are inviting people to have coffee with them.
The Coffee with a Cop program is a chance for members of the public to get to know their police force. It’s also an opportunity for people to talk with officers about concerns they have in the city or their neighborhoods.
Lt. Brian Gossard said the key to establishing a good relationship between police and residents is to talk face to face in a casual setting.
“We want to make this city as great as possible and we need the help of the community to do that,” Gossard said. “They have to trust that we’re doing things for the right reasons and doing it the right way.”
Gossard said friendly meetings between police and the public is especially important in light of recent tension.
“If we ever have an officer-involved shooting, we can talk about what steps we go through and what the prosecutor’s office is looking at — just so we can address those issues before they come up,” Gossard said.
Coffee with a Cop is Friday starting at 9 a.m. at Christos New City Grill on Teal Road in Lafayette. Admission is free and so is the coffee.
