LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – The Lafayette School Corporation is working to get more detailed background checks for volunteers who work with students.
The board had a first reading on the policy Monday night.
The policy would affect all volunteers, including people coming into the buildings and field trip chaperones.
Superintendent Les Huddle said there was no incident leading to the change. He said the corporation was reviewing safety policies and procedures. He explained the change is similar to other schools’ policies.
“We felt this was just another step in trying to assure our families, that again, the adults that are going to be around our children, in our schools or on field trips, they can rest assured they will have gone through a criminal background check,” Huddle said. “Hopefully, we won’t have any incidents in the future.”
The board will take action at the November meeting. The policy would then be implemented at the start of second semester.
