WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Purdue Sports) — Purdue sophomore forward Caleb Swanigan is 1-of-10 players to be named to the 2016-17 Preseason All-Big Ten team, the conference announced today.
A native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Swanigan is 1-of-3 sophomores to be named to the squad, joined by Indiana’s Thomas Bryant and Wisconsin’s Ethan Happ. The remaining members of the preseason squad are Illinois’ Malcolm Hill, Indiana’s James Blackmon Jr., Iowa’s Peter Jok, Maryland’s Melo Trimble, Michigan’s Derrick Walton Jr., and Wisconsin’s Nigel Hayes and Bronson Koenig. Hayes was named the Big Ten’s Preseason Player of the Year and was the only unanimous selection to the team.
Swanigan averaged 10.2 points per game and led the Big Ten in rebounding in all games played (8.3 RPG) a year ago, en route to earning a spot on the Big Ten’s All-Freshman Team. He set a school record for double-doubles by a freshman (8) and was 1-of-3 freshmen nationally with at least 340 points, 280 rebounds, 60 assists and 20 made 3-pointers (Memphis’ Dedric Lawson, IPFW’s John Konchar). His 8.3 rebounds per game were the sixth most by a Big Ten freshman since the 1993-94 season.
He became the second freshman in Purdue history with at least 300 points, 200 rebounds and 50 assists, joining Robbie Hummel (2007-08) on the exclusive list.
The Boilermakers return three starters and eight letterwinners from last year’s team that posted a 26-9 record and was ranked in the nation’s top 25 all year long. This year’s team is ranked in the top 20 of nearly all of the preseason polls.
Mini plans and single-game tickets are now on sale to the general public and tickets for the Villanova and Indiana games will only be available with the purchase of mini plans and season tickets.
