CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. (WLFI) – U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly made a stop in Montgomery County Tuesday to advocate for Indiana’s steel industry.

Donnelly took a tour of the Nucor sheet steel mill in Crawfordsville. He talked to employees and was able to see some of the factory operations.

Representatives also presented him with a Man of Steel award for his continued support of the steel industry.

Donnelly said steel production plays a major role in Indiana’s economy, and he will work toward putting an end to the dumping of foreign steel in the U.S.

“It’s tremendous amount of jobs here. Very, very good paying jobs, and then the products that go out of here are worked on by many, many other company’s in the region,” said Donnelly.

Nucor Crawfordsville General Manager Jeff Powers said, “The work that Senator Donnelly and a lot of his peers have done to allow us to compete on a level playing field, it really set the stage for Nucor Corporation.”

Nucor is the largest steel producer and recycler in North America. It employs more than 1,700 people in Indiana.
