Civic Theatre gets creepy, kooky with ‘Addams Family’ musical

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette is bringing one of the spookiest families to the stage at Sunnyside Intermediate School. “The Addams Family, A New Musical” will run both weekends from Oct. 28-Nov. 6.

Julia Colby and Larry Sommers will play the iconic couple Morticia and Gomez Addams. They recently stopped by News 18 This Morning to talk about the upcoming musical.

“This particular production is a little bit different,” Colby said. “Wednesday has grown up, and she wants to bring home her ‘normal’ boyfriend to meet the family. You can only imagine the wonderful, fun and crazy events that happen in the course of the show.”

The cast and crew has been rehearsing for nearly eight weeks.

“This production has a particularly talented cast,” Sommers said.

We also asked Colby and Sommers about their inspiration for Morticia and Gomez.

“I personally remember the TV series,” Colby said. “I went back and watched Carolyn Jones for some of the mannerisms early on in the process. I don’t like to influence it too much. I want it to be my own. But of the renditions I’ve seen, she’s the one that has inspired me.”

As for Sommers, he said, “The musical was written for Bebe Neuwirth – Lillith from ‘Cheers’ – and Nathan Lane. So it has a lot of their flavor.”

“The Addams Family, A New Musical” will run Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. the weekend of Oct. 28-29. There will also be performances the following weekend on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Friday and Saturday performances, Nov. 5-6, are at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday performance on Nov. 6 will be at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets are $19 for adults, $16 for seniors and $11 for youth. Senior tickets are for adults 65 and older, and youth tickets are those 18 and under. You can buy them by calling 765-423-7529 or online.
