NORWAY, Ind. (WLFI) — NIPSCO tested new floodgates at the Norway Dam Wednesday that are meant to make the dam safer.
Five new floodgates were added to help manipulate water flow during a flood to better protect the dam and Lake Shafer. Each flood gate is eight feet tall by 40 feet long and allows up to 2500 cubic feet of water over the dam every second.
NIPSCO opened the gates for what is called “wet testing” on Wednesday after successful “dry tests.”
The wet tests were successful and if testing goes well on Thursday, the flood gates will become operational.
The Oakdale Dam also had some renovations done to the spillway to help the dam release more water during a flood.
