CROWN POINT, Ind. (WLFI) — A man died late Friday night after crashing near an exit ramp on Interstate 65.

Indiana State Police said the crash happened just after 10 p.m. near the exit ramp from I-65 to U.S. 231 in Crown Point.

Forty-eight-year-old John Gondell of Gary was traveling south on the interstate when he attempted to take the exit ramp. Gondell did not turn with the exit ramp and continued straight, leaving the roadway. The car then struck a large light pole, police said.

Gondell had to be removed from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they do not know why Gondell failed to turn on the exit ramp.
