TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) — Former McCutcheon baseball coach Jake Burton is up against incumbent Jim Slaven in the race for Tippecanoe County School Board, District 4.
If you haven’t already voted, these two candidates hope you will listen to their final pleas.
Burton said, although he’s never held office, he believes 41 years of coaching, teaching and administrating have prepared him for the position. He said he’s running because he believes the greatest reward for being involved in education is the satisfaction you get from influencing children’s lives.
“I think I have a lot of things that I can offer that I’ve seen firsthand. I’m sort of the grass-roots type of person that’s been in the buildings and sees what takes place,” Burton said.
Slaven has been on the TSC School Board for the past 8½ years and is currently the vice president. He said he’s qualified to face the challenges of a growing school corporation.
He said TSC Board members have worked well with each other throughout various changes of structure from the state. He plans to work with other school corporations in the future.
“[I would] come up with an accountability model that would be less testing and more direct, very responsive for our teachers,” Slaven said.
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8.
