TIPPECANOE CO., Ind. (WLFI) — Students in the Tippecanoe School Corporation are honoring veterans one day early.
Battle Ground Intermediate and Wea Ridge Elementary schools both put on shows Thursday morning.
Then in the afternoon, Mayflower Mill Elementary students treated veterans to patriotic songs and reminders of how military men and women fought for the country throughout history. At the end, vets were handed American flags while their names were announced.
Army veteran Stephen Lockard said it’s important to teach kids what it means to serve your country.
“This is our legacy. It’s our future,” Lockard said. “When these kids get it at this age and realize what freedom and liberty is all about, we know we’ve got it made.”
U.S. Marine Alec Gibson said the program reminds him of looking up to veterans when he was a kid.
“It really means a lot to me to honor veterans,” Gibson said. “Whether it be paying for a meal, donating money or just giving them your time.”
Lockard said he was moved when the kids recited the pledge of allegiance, which he said strikes at the core of patriotism.
