LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — More toys are staying in the community this holiday season thanks to members of the Lafayette Marine Corps League – David M. Shoup Detachment No. 547.

“It’s the favorite time of the year for all of us, it really is, and we need to make it special for everybody,” member Vincent Hughes said.

The group is now in charge of Toys for Tots in Tippecanoe County. All donations to the program will stay local and give area children a reason to smile this holiday season.

“If we are able to branch out eventually to help more that are not in the surrounding area, then we can do that,” member Mathew Bowman said.

The goal is to unite the community and offer toys to bring hope to less fortunate families at Christmas.

“Right now, we want to focus on kids that are in this area so we can help make their Christmas truly magical,” Bowman said.

Hughes said, “We’re really looking forward to, hopefully, helping fill some of that gap to help the agencies here in the county.”
