Volunteers to pay for background checks at Lafayette schools

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Lafayette School Corporation is getting more detailed background checks, but it’s coming at a cost for volunteers.

Starting next semester, all school volunteers including people coming into the buildings and field trip chaperones, will have to pay about $18 for a proper background check.

After the background investigation bureau approves volunteers, they will receive a card that will get them in and out of the school for two years.

LSC Superintendent Les Huddle said there was no incident leading to the change. He said the old system just wasn’t as thorough.

The new one will check criminal backgrounds in and out of Tippecanoe County.

“They’ll do a nationwide search for us so that way we will feel a little safer when these volunteers go through the background check,” said Huddle. “And then we can give them permission to come into our schools and work with kids and go on field trips and those types of things.”

Huddle said the new policy still allows LSC to use other background checks for example, read to succeed volunteers who already had background checks through United Way.

The board approved the new policy on Monday night.
