WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Purdue Sports) — Purdue sophomore Caleb Swanigan was named to the Wooden Award preseason watch list announced today.
Chosen by a preseason poll of national college basketball experts, the Wooden Award watch list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who are the early front-runners for college basketball’s most prestigious individual honor. Swanigan is 1-of-10 Big Ten players on the watch list.
Earlier this offseason, Swanigan was named to the Malone Award watch list (nation’s top power forward), a preseason first-team All-Big Ten selection and a Naismith Award watch selection.
Swanigan is off to a tremendous start in the 2016-17 season, averaging 21.5 points, 14.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game. He was just the third major-college player (LSU’s Ben Simmons, Oklahoma’s Blake Griffin) to have 20 points, 20 rebounds and five assists in a game when he tallied 23 points, 20 rebounds and six assists in the season opener against McNeese State. He then scored 20 points with eight rebounds and four assists in Monday’s setback to No. 3-ranked Villanova.
Currently, he is the only player nationally to have played two games and average at least 20.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.
Swanigan and the 15th-ranked Boilermakers host Georgia State on Friday at 7 p.m. ET in Mackey Arena.
